Mary A. Welty

BOONSBORO - Mary Ann Beeler Welty, 85, of 243 N. Main St., died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 17, 1918, in Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Ellsworth II and Nina Marie Bender Beeler.

Her husband, Charles Franklin Welty, died Jan. 15, 1965.

She was a 1937 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

She retired from Boonsboro Municipal Offices.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, Boonsboro, where she had been a member of the choir, altar guild and taught Sunday school.

She was past worthy matron of Olive Branch Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Keedysville, a member of Historical Society of Boonsboro and was on the board of Boonsboro Cemetery.


She is survived by one daughter, Mary A. Risser of Watertown, Wis.; one sister, Bettie J. Houser of Boonsboro; two granddaughters, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Nina M. Welty; one sister, Sarah B. Shafer, and two brothers, Joseph E. Beeler III and James M. Beeler.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro. The Revs. Douglas L. Griffin and Christy Risser will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Daisy C. Pittman

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Mrs. Daisy C. Pittman, 94, of 9889 Hunter Road, went home to be with the Lord at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004. Death occurred at The Shook Home, Chambersburg, Pa., where Mrs. Pittman had been a guest since October 2002.

Born Sept. 1, 1909, at Stoney Lonesome, Pecktonville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Harry James and Cealie Elizabeth Reed Trumpower.

Mrs. Pittman was a homemaker. During the 1960s, she and her late husband of 40 years, George Washington Pittman, who died April 16, 1970, were foster parents.

She was a member of Park Head United Methodist Church of Big Pool, Md. For many years she was an active member and treasurer of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. Her personal interests were flowers, gardening, sewing, canning and cooking.

Surviving are two daughters, Shirley E. (Mrs. Daniel) Ankrom of Hagerstown, Md., and Gloria R. (Mrs. Aden M.) Metcalfe of Mercersburg. Two sisters, Lola Miller of Pecktonville, and Laura Kline of Hagerstown. A grandson, Lynn S. Shives of Smithsburg, Md. Five other grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, two stepgreat-great-grandchildren, two great-great-great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to acknowledge the several special caregivers who attended Mrs. Pittman while at Shook Home.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia Shives and her husband Dalmus Shives; a grandson, Ricky Daley; a companion, Bruce Garland; three sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m. in Mercersburg First Church of God, 107 S. Park Ave., with the Revs. Ernest E. Pletcher, W. David Kent, MD, and Norris E. Sword Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Park Head Cemetery, Big Pool, Md.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Mercersburg First Church of God. For the convenience of the public, the doors of the church will be open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg.

Donald L. Shives Sr.

Donald L. "Buck" Shives Sr., 74, of 10908 Clinton Ave., Hagerstown, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 29, 1929, in Wilmington, Del., he was the son of the late Clay U. and Mattie Trumpower Shives.

He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was employed with the Western Maryland Railroad/CSX for more than 40 years, retiring in 1991.

He was a member of the American Legion, Joseph C. Herbert Post 222 in Clear Spring, Md., and B.P.O. Elks 378.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Hahne Shives; one son, Donald L. Shives Jr. of Clear Spring, Md.; one sister, Janice Kelley of Clear Spring, Md.; and two grandsons, Steve Shives of Hagerstown, and Danny Shives of Clear Spring, Md.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Graveside services will be held in the Hancock Presbyterian Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Elaine Swinehart will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Family requests the omission of flowers, and memorial donations to Halfway Fire and Ambulance, 11114 Lincoln Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Albert A. McVitty

VISTA, Calif. - Albert Arthur McVitty, 76, of Vista, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at his residence in California.
