Schools open on Presidents Day

February 10, 2004|by SCOTT BUTKI

Students in Washington County Public Schools won't have Presidents Day off next Monday because of the number of days classes were canceled because of bad weather, a schools spokeswoman said Monday.

Monday, Feb. 16, will be a makeup day for Feb. 6, when schools were not in session because of inclement weather, spokeswoman Carol Mowen said.

While the school system's official calendar listed Feb. 16 as being a school holiday, it also listed it as a makeup day if needed for a day when schools were canceled due to the weather.

Friday was the sixth day this school year that Washington County Public Schools canceled classes due to inclement weather, Mowen said.

She said the county schools' calendar allows for five makeup days in June. Students now will have classes on June 4, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Graduation is scheduled for June 10.

The Sept. 19 inclement weather day used for Hurricane Isabel has been waived by the state and is not included among the days the school system has to make up, she said.
