Kindergarten registration planned in county

Registration for Washington County Public Schools' fall kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes will be held Wednesday during regular school hours at local elementary schools.

To enter kindergarten this fall, a child must observe his or her 5th birthday on or before Oct. 31. To enter pre-kindergarten in the fall, a child must observe his or her 4th birthday on or before Sept. 30 and meet eligibility criteria.

Pre-kindergarten classes currently are offered at Bester, Eastern, Funkstown, Hancock, Hickory, Lincolnshire, Marshall Street, Robinwood and Salem Avenue schools. If you are able to provide transportation, your child may be eligible to attend one of these schools even if you live outside that district.

Those registering a child for kindergarten will need the child's immunization record, proof of date of birth, Social Security number, proof of residency and blood lead screening. For more information, call 301-766-2955.


Additional dates for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten registration are Wednesday, April 14; Wednesday, May 19; and Wednesday, July 14.

Penn State Mont Alto to host application workshops

MONT ALTO, Pa. - The Penn State Mont Alto Admissions Office will host two application workshops this winter for individuals interested in applying to Penn State Mont Alto for the fall semester. Individuals who complete the application for admission at the event or bring a completed application with them will not have to pay the $50 application fee.

The first application workshop will take place Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Community Room at Gettysburg Village Factory Outlets. The second workshop will be Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Community Room at Chambersburg (Pa.) Mall.

English enrichment classes offered on Saturdays

The Washington County ESOL program offers Saturday English enrichment classes for students in grades kindergarten through 12, and English classes for adults in the community.

The elementary student English classes are based on a comprehensive program for English language learners. The middle and high school program focuses on reading and writing.

Classes will run every Saturday through May 8 unless it is a holiday weekend or there are cancellations due to inclement weather. Enrollment takes place at the Saturday ESOL School. The address is South High School, alternative "blue" building, 1101 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown.
