Weather shuffles lineup once more

The Maryland 2A-1A West Indoor Track Championships at Hagerstown Community College was one of several area events postponed Friday due to the weather.

The meet is rescheduled for this Friday (Feb. 13) at 4 p.m. at HCC. The top four finishers in each event are guaranteed berths in the state meet three days later (Feb. 16) at Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.

"It shouldn't hurt the jumpers, throwers or sprinters, but the distance runners will have trouble coming back in that short amount of time," Smithsburg coach and 2A-1A West meet director Ray Shriver said.

Washington County has nine top boys seeds in the region - Smithsburg's Chad Brown (55-meter dash), Boonsboro's Dan Robinson (55 hurdles, high jump) and Williamsport's Aaron Buchman (1,600), Devin Hewitt (3,200), Rhet Troxell (500, 800) and 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Boonsboro's Sarah Hensley (55 hurdles) and Smithsburg's Jessica Yu (high jump) are seeded first for the county girls, while Boonsboro's Eileen Stump and Smithsburg's Samantha Schweinhart are tied for the top seed in the pole vault.

The 3A-2A West meet, which includes North Hagerstown, Middletown and Frederick, is on for today at HCC at 2 p.m. The 3A-2A state meet also is set for Feb. 16 at Prince George's.

For the moment, the boys basketball clash between No. 1 Martinsburg and No. 2 South Hagerstown is on for tonight.

The possibility existed that with Friday's postponements, the Rebels could cancel the meeting with the Bulldogs in order to make up Friday's MVAL Antietam contest with Catoctin. But according to South Hagerstown athletic director Mike Tesla, the Rebels and Cougars will make up that game Feb. 26 - the final day for Maryland schools to play regular-season games.

That decision means the anticipated rematch between the area's top two teams, barring any more bad weather, likely will take place. Martinsburg beat South 64-60 on Dec. 30.
