Little Sluggers toplay on three fields

SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Little Sluggers will play at three different fields this spring.

Most of the games will be played at Fireman's Field, which was donated by the Smithsburg Fire Department in 1972. More than $11,000 has been spent putting up a new fence at that field, league President Steve Pitsnogle said.

Additional play will be on a new field at the corner of Veterans Park and the Smithsburg Elementary School. That is where the Sluggers played prior to moving to Fireman's Field.

The second field is needed with the growth of the town and the growth of the league.

The older players, 13 to 15 years old, will play at the Smithsburg Lions Club Park.

The league is working with town park commission employees to renovate the new field and install 90-foot baselines. An additional $4,000 is needed to repair the backstop and add protective fencing at the Smithsburg Lions Club Park.

Anyone wishing to contribute may call the league at 301-824-6370.

Registration for ages 5 to 15 will be held every Saturday in February from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Smithsburg Fire Hall.

The cost is $30 per player or $60 per family for the 5-to-12 age group.

Registration for the Babe Ruth group, ages 13 to 15, is $50 a player.

Girl Scout cookiesare going on sale

SMITHSBURG - Girl Scout cookies are about more than sweets, said Gwen Blacklin, Smithsburg service unit manager.

Many of today's successful businesswomen say selling Girl Scout cookies was their first step toward their careers, teaching them money management, decision making and goal setting, Blacklin said.

This year, cookies are $3 a box and will be sold throughout the Smithsburg area by Scouts of all ages.

Anyone interested in ordering cookies may call the Hagerstown service center at 301-791-5686. Proceeds stay in the Shawnee Council and benefit girls and programs in the community.
