Township supervisor resigns from post

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - A 16-year Washington Township supervisor resigned from the board Monday night, saying in a letter to his fellow supervisors that "... all good things must come to an end and my time is here."

Richard Eigenbrode, 70, whose four-year term ends Dec. 31, 2005, has had health problems in recent years. His resignation takes effect immediately, he said.

The supervisors voted to accept the resignation "with great regret."

Board Chairman Art Cordell said Eigenbrode "has been a terrific asset to this community for (nearly) 17 years."

Township Manager Mike Christopher credited Eigenbrode with coordinating efforts over the years between state and local officials from Greencastle, Pa., to Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., that resulted in millions of dollars spent on major improvements to Pa. 16.


"You've been an excellent boss and a tremendous person to work with," Christopher said.

Applications for Eigenbrode's replacement are available in the township office on Welty Road. The job pays up to $3,250 a year, based on $65 for each meeting attended.

Supervisors serve at large.

Christopher said the deadline for submitting applications is Feb. 25, at which time the supervisors will begin interviews. Eigenbrode is Republican, and only registered Republicans can apply, Christopher said.

Whomever is selected will have to seek re-election next year.

The supervisors also are seeking applicants for the township's new Impact Fee Advisory Committee. The deadline is Feb. 11.

The supervisors voted to create an impact fee ordinance last month in light of the proposed development of more than 1,000 acres of farmland in the township's east end. A proposed commercial development is expected to include a shopping center anchored by a Wal-Mart SuperCenter and home-improvement store, plus residential developments for more than 1,400 single- and multi-family homes.

Advisory committee members must be residents of the township or must conduct business in it. At least 40 percent of its members must represent the real estate, commercial and residential development and building industries.

The committee has no voting authority. It will make recommendations to the supervisors.

In addition to basic residency information, the application form asks for the applicant's education background, employment, expertise or knowledge and why they want to serve.
