Karen D. Souders


SHARPSBURG - Karen Diane Souders, 46, of 18561 Burnside Bridge Road, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 21, 1957, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of Ray T. and Lynda DeLauney Norris of Sharpsburg.

She was employed with United Cerebral Palsy for 16 years as a care provider.

She loved to travel and care for animals.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 18 years, John N. Souders; maternal grandparents, Dallas and Betty Waters of Sharpsburg; an aunt, Lisa Burker of Sharpsburg; two nieces, Sarah Souders of Fairfield, Pa., and Amanda Souders of Breathedsville, Md.; four aunts; one uncle; one great-uncle; and her pets, a yellow Lab, Ralphie; and cat, Dolly Mae.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Md. The Rev. John W. Schildt will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Monday at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.

Russell C. Buffington


Russell Clinton Buffington, 83, of 17022 Broadfording Road in Hagerstown, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 10, 1920, in Union Bridge, Md., he was the son of the late Ira Clinton Buffington and Edna Jane Crabbs Buffington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Pheabus Buffington, in 1971.

He was an engineer with the Western Maryland Railroad, retiring in 1983.

He is survived by one son, Ronald R. Laughman of Hagerstown; one foster sister, Lois Smith of New Windsor, Md.; two brothers, Roger Buffington of Keymar, Md., and Jack Buffington of Union Bridge; his caregivers, Stacy and Jessie Taylor, with whom he lived; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, John R. Buffington; and one sister, Phyllis Buffington.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Clear Spring. The Rev. James Mueller will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Union Lutheran Cemetery, Union Bridge.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open at noon.
