Richard W. Smith


Richard Wayne Smith, 66, of 16817 Alcott Road, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 14, 1938, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Eva V. Grams Smith.

He was a 1955 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He was employed by Overnite Transportation, retiring after 27 years of service.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Funkstown, the Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co. and AARP.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, V. Ann Smith; one daughter, Eelice A. Gantz of Warfordsburg, Pa.; one son, Daniel W. Smith of State Line, Pa.; one sister, Janet Robucci of Hagerstown; two brothers, Floyd Smith of Frostproof, Fla., and Lloyd Smith of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Smith, Ronald Smith and Glessner Smith.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home in Hagerstown. The Rev. William Bruce Dick will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Anna E. Gossard


Anna Elizabeth Gossard, 92, of 1183 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.

Born Nov. 11, 1911, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John Paul and Mary Feigley Richard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Victor Gossard.

She received her bachelor of arts degree from Shepherd College and her master's degree from Western Maryland College.

She was a teacher with the Washington County Board of Education, teaching at Smithsburg and Woodland Way elementary schools.

She was a member of the Maryland State Retired Teachers Association and AAUW.

She is survived by two daughters, Virginia A. Gossard of Hagerstown and Kenna E. Gossard of Norfolk, Va.; one sister, Mary V. Richard of Hagerstown; and one brother, John P. Richard Jr. of Florida.

Services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home in Hagerstown. The Revs. Thom Smith and Mark Snyder will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Monday from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.




Virginia M. Fitzwater


Virginia M. Fitzwater, 85, formerly of 1501 Kensington Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport.

Born Aug. 10, 1918, in Jonesboro, Ark., she was the daughter of the late William F. and Gertrude L. Boone Malone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Fitzwater, in 1976.

She retired from Bohman Realty in 1992.

She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, where she served on the Altar Guild among other committees.

She was a member of the Lioness Club of Hagerstown, Antietam Garden Club, Retired Officers' Wives and The Retired Officers Association.

She is survived by one daughter, Virginia L. Fitzwater of Hagerstown; one son, John T. Fitzwater Jr. of Hagerstown; one grandson, Christopher L. Schappell of Newport News, Va.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Helen L. Nickerson.

A memorial service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church. The Revs. Kenneth S. Valentine and Patrick L. Ricker will officiate.

Burial will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

William G. Hines


William G. "Bill" Hines, 47, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004.

Born April 15, 1956, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Eugene Franklin and Anna Marie Raybold Hines.

He attended North Hagerstown High School.

He was a forklift operator for Relizon in Hagerstown for the past 10 years.

He was a member of Goodwill Athletic Association; the National Rifle Association of Washington, D.C.; the Graphic Communication Internal Union; and the Greencastle, Pa., Sportsmen's Association.

He is survived by one daughter, Jamie Hall of Hagerstown; two sisters, Linda M. Lewis of Smithsburg and Anna M. Nicol of Hagerstown; three brothers, Ronnie E. Hines of Maugansville and Richard E. Hines and John W. Hines, both of Hagerstown; two half brothers, Jerry L. Henson of Long Beach, Calif., and Lee F. Henson of Bera, W.Va.; two nieces; and two nephews.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Jonathan D. Laye will officiate.

Visitation will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.




Berniece E. Anderson


DARKESVILLE, W.Va. - Berniece Elizabeth Anderson, 105, of Darkesville and formerly of Ranson, W.Va., died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at Heartland of Martinsburg, W.Va.
