Man charged hours after being released

A Baltimore man who was released from the Maryland Correctional Institution on Monday morning was back in custody in a matter of hours, Maryland State Police said.

Police charged Benton D. Stokes, 40, with two counts of theft under $500 Monday following an incident at the Greyhound Bus Terminal behind the McDonald's on Md. 65 south of Hagerstown.

Police allege that just after 8:30 a.m., minutes after he was taken to the terminal from the Roxbury Road facility, Stokes stole a cell phone and $30 from the jacket pocket of an employee there and money from a cashier's drawer.

A witness and the victim's husband followed Stokes, who had boarded a bus to Harrisburg, Pa., but got off after being confronted by the victim, but lost track of him, police said. Police said Stokes was found at the nearby Waffle House restaurant soon after they began investigating the incident at 2:17 p.m.

Stokes was jailed on $2,500 bail, police said.

An officer at the Washington County Detention Center could not be reached Monday evening to confirm Stokes' status or bond amount.
