Tyler's effort leads Blazers

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Alex Tyler had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds as Clear Spring edged Southern Fulton on Wednesday, 60-55.

The two teams exchanged baskets throughout the contest and neither held a comfortable lead. Clear Spring's largest lead was five points, which turned out to be the final difference.

Cody Beard had nine points, seven rebounds and seven assists and Brandon Yost also had nine points for the Blazers (10-2).

Danny True led Southern Fulton (12-4) with 16 points and Brock Flowers added 13 points and seven assists. Jay Ifert had 10 rebounds.

Maret 54, St. James 29

WASHINGTON - Maret School outscored St. James 40-14 in the middle two quarters and the Frogs (7-3, 2-1) kept the Saints winless in Mid-Atlantic Conference play.

Matt Gressing led the St. James (5-5, 0-4) with 16 points and five rebounds. Shannon Stange added seven points in the loss.


No. 3 Hedgesville 50 No. 10 Martinsburg 34

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Miranda Reed had 18 points as Hedgesville remained undefeated in Apple Valley League play with a win over Martinsburg.

Jennifer Hoffman added eight points for the Eagles (9-3, 4-0), who jumped out to a 32-14 halftime lead.

Meredith Bullet had 11 points for Martinsburg (4-8, 3-2).

Mercersburg 25, St. James 23

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Whitney Neilson scored 10 points for St. James as the Saints (2-7) fell to Mercersburg Academy (2-9) in overtime.


Goretti 36, Mercersburg 28: Logan Bolinger scored 11 points while Chad Bickle had 10 for St. Maria Goretti (10-0).

Smithsburg 38, Catoctin 31: Marc Weller had 10 points and Alex Wine added 9 for Smithsburg (8-2).

Clear Spring 35, Southern Fulton 32: Tyler Shifler had 12 points and Derek Dyer added 11 for Clear Spring.


Hedgesville sweeps Goretti

Lauren Korzep won the 500-yard freestyle in 7 minutes, 33.85 seconds to lead the Hedgesville girls swim team to a 96-69 win over St. Maria Goretti.

Lauren Ippolito won the 100 flystroke (1:17.77) and the 100 backstroke (1:23.24) for Goretti's girls.

Ritchy Cochran led the Hedgesville boys with a win in the 200 individual medley (2:36.65) and the Eagles edged the Gaels, 81-74.

Greg Skipton won the 200 freestyle (2:18.76) and the 100 breaststoke (1:18.50).

Both Hedgesville and Goretti will now prepare for the Apple Valley Swim Championships on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The meet will be held at the Hagerstown YMCA and will also feature Jefferson and Martinsburg.


Blue Storm visits F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. - Mercersburg Academy's squash team ventured into the college ranks at Division III Franklin & Marshall College, ranked 11th in the nation, and came away with a 5-0 loss.

HCC 94, Howard 79

COLUMBIA, Md. - Thomas Jefferson scored 14 of his 21 points and Terrell Kittelberger added 11 of his team-hit 25 in the second half to lift Hagerstown Community College over Howard in a Maryland JuCo Conference game.

The Hawks (14-4, 7-3) turned up the pace of the game in the second half, breaking open a 46-44 halftime lead with their transition game. Howard elected to go to a man defense against the quicker HCC and failed to slow HCC's drives to the basket.

Rexson Kenley had 18 points and 14 assists for the Hawks, while Johnson had 10 rebounds. Andre Brooks finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Warren Marchany had 23 points and Rodderick Berry added 18 for Howard.


Former Leopard Brown honored

Mount St. Mary's freshman Corey Brown was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 18.

Brown, a Smithsburg grad, posted a third place leap of 6.85 meters in the long jump and finished 12th in the triple jump at the USTCA Track Meet at Penn State last Saturday. The jumps were the NEC's third and eighth best of the season, respectively.
