A Heritage Academy junior and an eighth-grader at E. Russell Hicks Middle School were named Youths of the Month for November on Tuesday at a Washington County Commissioners meeting.

Kevin Sandell, son of Mark and Annette Sandell, was nominated by Harold Miles of Heritage Academy.

Miles described Kevin as "very organized, greatly emphasizes the details of life, great leader and role model, is sensitive and compassionate as well as a hard worker," according to the statement.

He achieved a 4.0 grade-point average at the school for his freshman and sophomore years, according to a written statement.

He also had the highest grades in Bible 9, American History, English 9, 10, Geometry, Spanish 1 and 2, Computer 1 and Biology, according to the statement.

Kevin has been nominated to the United States National Soccer awards, the International Language Awards and the National English Merit Award, among others.

He participates in a youth group, church softball, plays tone bells and serves as an usher. He lettered in varsity baseball, basketball and soccer at Heritage.

Danielle Higgins has achieved the Distinguished Honor Roll every marking period since sixth grade at E. Russell Hicks.

Danielle, daughter of Eric and Jeanette Higgins, was the 2003 winner of the Washington County Free Library Poetry contest held for sixth- through eighth-grade students.

She scored a 1,000 on the SAT given to seventh-graders through the Johns Hopkins Talent Search.

She is in the marching and concert bands at Hicks and holds the first chair position in the clarinet section; and is president of the Student Council and the school newspaper, which she helped start.

Danielle and her family attend church at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Hagerstown.

Kevin and Danielle each received a Certificate of Merit and a savings bond.
