Washington County needs umpires

The Washington County Umpires Association is actively seeking new members to help officiate baseball and softball games in the area.

The level of play ranges from high school to adult- and youth-league games.

The association's first meeting of the year is Jan. 25 at the Williamsport American Legion, beginning at 7 p.m.

"We need to get some people involved, because the kids aren't going to play if we don't," John McAllister, the association's commissioner, said. "We would like to have some experienced people - men and women who have been around the game - attend the meeting. Anyone that is interested, please show up.

"Our association is dedicated to teaching the mechanics of officiating baseball and softball. And there's all kinds of room for advancement."

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association's mandatory clinic in this area for baseball and softball officials is Feb. 23 at South Hagerstown High School, beginning at 7 p.m.

For more information, contact McAllister at 301-797-3283.
