Memorial lamps, posts sell out

January 13, 2004

CLEAR SPRING - The demand for memorial street lamps and posts in town has exceeded the availability of sites where they can be installed.

Clear Spring Garden Club President Cindy Downs reported at Monday night's Town Council meeting that all eight of the available locations on North Mill and North Martin streets have been sold.

"They went very fast despite the fact the price has gone up about $200," Downs said. The cost for one of the old-fashioned lamps and a post now is approximately $1,100.

Downs said the lamps and posts may be dedicated in memory of or in honor of loved ones, both past and present, by the people of Clear Spring. Each has a plaque stating to whom it is dedicated.

"There are some dark spots along Cumberland Street (U.S. 40) and we may be selling more there," Downs said.

There also has been interest in lights on South Martin Street but for now, there is no conduit there.

Inquiries should be directed to 301-842-3637.
