Police seek man in alleged carjacking

January 12, 2004|by BRIAN SHAPPELL

A man held a gun to woman's head during an apparent carjacking Sunday evening, Hagerstown Police Department Sgt. Timothy Wolford said.

Wolford said the woman, a Hagerstown resident, said a man approached her at 10:02 p.m. and placed a silver handgun to her head while she was getting into her 1993 Chevrolet Tahoe or Blazer parked outside of 747 S. Potomac St.

Wolford said the woman complied with the assailant's orders to get out of the vehicle and was not struck or injured.

The assailant apparently drove south in the vehicle, which is black with a silver stripe, on South Potomac Street, Wolford said.

Several police cruisers swarmed the area looking for the man, to no avail, in the minutes after the incident. Otherwise, there was no sign of the incident on a quiet, frigid Sunday evening.

Wolford said the investigation still was in its preliminary stages late Sunday. He said a detailed description of the assailant was not available, but likely would be released after detectives interviewed the victim late Sunday or today.
