DARGAN - A single-story unoccupied rancher that was for sale was destroyed by fire Saturday morning, said Arnold Martin, deputy chief of the Potomac Valley Volunteer Fire Co.

The cause of the fire at 18520 Mount Lock Hill Road in southern Washington County had not been determined, according to a release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office.

Damage was estimated at $125,000, the release said. The home was owned by Ernie and Donna Gray of Sharpsburg.

The 3:04 a.m. fire started in the kitchen/living room area, the release said.

Approximately 39 firefighters from Potomac Valley, Sharpsburg, Boonsboro, Fairplay, Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Shepherdstown, W.Va., and the air and rehab units responded to the fire, fire officials said.

The fire was under control within 45 minutes, according to the fire marshal's office.

Martin said firefighters had to use water from a pond on the John Brown Farm to put out the fire.
