Teen attacked while taking out trash


FREDERICK, Md. - A 16-year-old boy visiting a relative on Carlton Place told Frederick Police he was accosted Saturday morning as he was taking trash to a community Dumpster.

Officer Eric Stanley began an investigation after the victim reported that three men struck him with fists and a trouser belt. The youth had a cut on his head and a bloody and swollen nose, Stanley said in a press release.

Hospital patient faces burglary, theft charges


FREDERICK, Md. - Officer Mark Pecor was already working on a burglary case involving a large amount of stolen jewelry Friday when he got a call from Frederick Memorial Hospital security personnel about a patient with a large amount of jewelry in his coat pocket.

Before the evening was over, the patient was charged with the burglary and theft after the victim responded to the hospital and identified the jewelry, Pecor said in a press release from Frederick Police.

Joseph Bruce Smith, 39, of 1585 Carey Place, Frederick, was taken to the Frederick County Detention Center where he was charged with one count each of second-, third- and fourth-degree burglary, misdemeanor theft and destruction of property.

He was being held on $36,000 bond Saturday night, jail officials said.

The burglary occurred at 727 Motter Ave. and was reported to police at 5:01 p.m. Entry was made by breaking the glass in a rear door, Pecor said.

The hospital called Pecor at 7:40 p.m.
