A Hackensack, N.J., developer is planning more stores for the Crosspoint shopping center near Valley Mall, including a possible Kohl's department store, Washington County Senior Planner Tim Lung said.

Crosspoint on Cole Road near Massey Boulevard in Halfway, houses Target and arts and crafts store Michaels.

Gateway Country Stores had planned to open a computer store in a 5,000-square-foot building in the shopping center in 2001. Those plans never materialized, Lung said.

Christopher Bell, senior vice president of Hekemian & Company - the shopping center's developer - said Friday approximately 40,000 square feet will be added to Michaels to make room for several regional and national stores.

Construction is planned for the spring and fall, he said.

"Things are moving along very well," Bell said.

Bell, who works out of Hekemian's Annapolis office, said he could not yet reveal which stores would move in to the addition.

Lung said five stores ranging from 4,000 square feet to 15,000 square feet are planned for the addition, but he did not know the names of the stores.

Lung said the site plan for the addition is expected to be filed in the next couple of weeks.

The developer had sought approval from the Washington County Planning Commission in 1999 for a 60,000-square-foot store at the same location, but that store never was built.

Lung said a second section of Crosspoint planned for the other side of Target might include Kohl's. Bell said he could not say which stores are planned for the second section.

Kohl's representatives could not be reached for comment Friday.

Bell said the second section of the shopping center would be about 200,000 square feet. He said that site plan might be before the planning commission in a few months.

He also said one new business will be moving into half of the vacant building between Target and Michaels. He could not say which one because the lease has not yet been signed.

Hekemian is negotiating with other tenants for the other half of the building, Bell said.

Target opened a 104,000-square-foot store in March 2000.
