Truck crashes hauling radioactive waste

FREDERICK, Md. - A Baltimore man escaped injury and the Frederick County area was spared a potentially dangerous situation Wednesday when a pickup truck hauling radioactive medical waste crashed on Interstate 70, Maryland State Police in Frederick said.

Police said the driver, Herbert Oliver Graham, 53, of the 5500 block of Gist Avenue in Baltimore, was not injured when the 2002 Ford Ranger overturned when it left I-70 west of Md. 75 just before 9:30 a.m.

Police said the waste containers did not leak following the crash. Maryland Department of the Environment personnel determined that none of the containers had been breached, police said.

Interstate 70 was closed for about one hour while the responders inspected the containers, police said.

No charges were filed against Graham Wednesday, police said.

Rings stolen from car at Whitetail Ski Resort

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Two rings were stolen Tuesday from a vehicle in the parking lot of Whitetail Ski Resort, according to Pennsylvania State Police.


Police said a vehicle belonging to Becky Kugler of Chambersburg, Pa., was left unlocked in the parking lot of the Montgomery Township resort. One ring was described as a mother's ring with a ruby and diamond setting. The other was a diamond engagement ring.

The two rings were estimated to be worth $2,600, police said.

Pa. man is victim of identity theft

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police are investigating an ongoing case of identity theft involving an Antrim Township man.

Police said someone used personal information about the man to obtain credit cards. The report did not specify how much had been charged to the fraudulent accounts.

Playhouse set stolen from Pa. backyard

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A Little Tykes patio playhouse set was stolen from an Antrim Township woman's backyard, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The set, valued at $300, was stolen from the Rosebud Drive home of Marybeth M. Gardner between Christmas and Tuesday, police said.

Report details Pa. State Police activity

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police in Franklin County investigated 623 criminal offenses in December, according to the monthly report.

Police cleared 344 cases during the month and made 346 arrests, the report stated.

Troopers responded to 133 accidents and 24 hit-and-run accidents in the county during December, including one fatal accident in which two people died. Seventy-one other people were injured in vehicle accidents.

Thirty-seven people were arrested for driving under the influence and police issued 390 traffic citations and another 160 written warnings.

Police say man struck 11-year-old

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A borough man was charged with recklessly endangering another person after an 11-year-old boy was struck during a domestic dispute Tuesday, according to Chambersburg police.

Police allege that Silas L. McClure, 41, of 258 Garfield St., elbowed the boy in the face, causing him to fall against a heater, bruising his right arm and leg.

Man, boy robbed at gunpoint Tuesday

Police were called at 6:55 p.m. Tuesday for a reported armed robbery at the intersection of West North and North Prospect streets.

A 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy were standing at the intersection when two men approached them, asking for water and if they could use someone's cell phone.

While the four were standing together, a black Mitsubishi SUV drove up and two more men jumped out of the car. One displayed a gun and told the 19- and 15-year-old to get on the ground. Their jackets, personal identification and a cell phone were taken.

All four assailants jumped into the SUV, which headed south on Prospect Street. The vehicle had silver or gray door paneling, alloy wheels and temporary tags containing the letter "M."

Police said all four suspects were black. Police described two of the assailants as being 6 feet 3 inches tall, one weighing about 200 pounds, the other about 180 pounds. The other two were about 5 feet 8 inches tall, both about 165 pounds. All four wore dark clothing, and one wore white Adidas sneakers and a "do-rag" head covering, police said.

Frederick man faces drug, assault charges

FREDERICK, Md. - A 21-year-old Frederick man was charged Tuesday with marijuana possession and shoving an officer, Frederick City Police said.

Trotez Jevon Leonard, 21, of 316 E. 3rd St., Frederick, was charged with marijuana possession with the intent to distribute, resisting arrest, second-degree assault, driving without a license and driving with expired tags.

Police said drug enforcement officers were patroling Sagner Drive when they noticed a car with expired tags. The driver stopped, left the car and began walking away.

An officer followed the man and identified himself when the man shoved the officer and began running, police alleged.

Two escape as car slides into Potomac

FREDERICK, Md. - Two passengers of a Chevrolet Cavalier escaped a car before it found slid into the Potomac River early Tuesday, the Frederick County Sheriff's Department said.

Police said they were called at about 12:43 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a vehicle in the river at a boat ramp at New Design and Nolands Ferry roads.

Police found Christopher Robert Saxen, 19, who was the driver of the Cavalier. He said he and Susannah Shearman, 18, of Frederick were in the car when he tried to make a U-turn near the boat ramp, police said.

The car slid down the mud-covered ramp and into the river. Saxen and Shearman escaped the vehicle through windows, police said.

Tilt-bed trailer reported stolen

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A black, 8-foot, tilt-bed trailer was reported stolen Jan. 2 from near the intersection of Pa. 30 and Pa. 655 in Fulton County, Pennsylvania State Police said.

The trailer belonged to a Harrisonville, Pa., man. The trailer, valued at $500, had a tool box welded to it.
