January 08, 2004|by JACK HILL III

The St. Maria Goretti girls basketball team ended its five-game losing streak by defeating the Mercersburg Academy Blue Storm 34-28 Wednesday at the Gael Center.

Tasha Deneen had 14 points and eight rebounds for Goretti (6-10).

"It was a good win," Deneen said. "It was a team effort. Everybody contributed. Our team did a lot of boxing out to help me get some rebounds."

Katie Martin had 11 rebounds and Jessica Myers had nine for the Gaels.

"Katie Martin and Tasha Deneen are very important to our team because of their experience," Goretti coach Todd Rideout said. "Katie got some key rebounds and Tasha made some clutch shots for us. As a team, we shot well from the foul line tonight."

The Gaels made seven of their eight foul shots.

Christina Ongor had 10 points and five steals, while Shannon Bennic added eight points and five steals for Mercersburg (1-7).

The Gaels took their biggest lead at 17-4 with 3:28 remaining in the second quarter.

The Blue Storm came back to cut the lead to 32-28 with 35 seconds to go in the fourth quarter, but got no closer.

"You hope that when you hold a team to 34 points that you can win a game," Mercersburg coach Ryan Bennett said. "That is always our goal: To keep an opposing team to under 10 points a quarter. I was happy with the defense. We just couldn't run an offense."
