Cougars thrash Leopards in Antietam opener

SMITHSBURG - Emily Balogh had 19 points and six rebounds and Catoctin jumped out to a 21-5 first quarter lead and rolled past Smithsburg 56-37 in the MVAL Antietam on Tuesday.

Sara Wastler had nine points and eight assists for the Cougars (3-4, 1-0), who outrebounded Smithsburg, 33-19.

Tara Knable had 13 points and Heather Bywaters added 11 for the Leopards (3-6, 0-1).

Century 54, North 44

SYKESVILLE, Md. - Chelsea Loskarn had 15 points and as Century defeated North Hagerstown.

Cathlyn Williard had 13 points and Megan McGuire added 10 for the Knights (6-2).

Chelsea Clark had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Cara Thompson added 14 points for the Hubs (2-5).

T. Johnson 66, Urbana 62

FREDERICK, Md. - Sam Koehl had 27 points and six rebounds to lead Thomas Johnson over Urbana in the MVAL Chesapeake.


Abra Like had 16 points and seven steals for the Patriots (6-2, 1-0).

Hedgesville 73, B. Springs 43

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Sam Guell had 17 points and seven rebounds as Hedgesville cruised past Berkeley Springs.

The Eagles controlled the boards, outrebounding the Indians, 52-39 - including 19-6 on the offensive glass.

Ashton Butler had 12 points, while Kim Beaulieu added 11 points and Tiffany Linn had seven rebounds for Hedgesville (6-2).

Emily McCoy had 17 points and Danielle Fox added 16 for Berkeley Springs (2-5).

J. Buchanan 50, Northern 36

YORK, Pa. - Alicia Myers scored 16 points to lead James Buchanan past Northern.

Ashleigh Helfrick had 10 points and Amanda Snider had nine points, seven assists and six steals for the Rockets (10-3). Courtney West had five points and six rebounds.

Greencastle 51, East Penn. 44

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Kris Root had 18 points and 11 rebounds as Greencastle-Antrim never trailed against East Pennsboro.

Jess Statler had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Jess Ritchey had 10 steals and eight assists for the Blue Devils (6-5, 2-3).

Heritage 52, Highland View 30

Heidi Stamper had a season-high 27 points to go with 21 rebounds as Heritage Academy defeated Highland View Academy.

Brittany Eberly had 11 points and Whitney Schlimgen had eight assists for the Eagles (8-2).

Megan Boggess had 13 points for Highland View (1-4).

Broadfording 42, Faith 19

Tina Conner had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Broadfording to a Mason Dixon Christian Conference victory over Faith Christian.

Cindell Young hauled in 13 rebounds and Becka Conner grabbed 10 for the Lions (3-6, 2-2).

Calvary 51, Grace 30

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Rachel Peters had 22 points as Calvary Christian strolled past Grace Academy in MDCC action, keeping the Knights winless this season.

Laura Appel had 12 points and Marge Kennedy added 11 for Calvary.

Megan Cox had 21 points and Daniele Sowers had 10 rebounds for Grace (0-5, 0-3).


Goretti 59, Loyola 45

St. Maria Goretti outscored Loyola 16-4 in the second quarter and the Gaels halted late scoring runs to notch their first victory in the Baltimore Catholic League.

Kevin Brashears led Goretti (8-5, 1-2) with 12 points, while Joey Spierenburg added 10. Mike Nelson hauled in 10 rebounds.

Middletown 65, FSK 42

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Jonathan Hall had 24 points to lead Middletown past Francis Scott Key to open MVAL Piedmont play.

Zach Miss had 10 points, Joe Keimig dished out eight assists and Patrick Carney had six rebounds for the Knights (7-2, 1-0).

Calvert Hall 64, SJPH 48

BALTIMORE - Al Sowers had 11 points and five steals for St. John's at Prospect Hall in a loss to Calvert Hall in an MIAA 'A' conference game.

Tanner Ellis added nine points for the Vikings (7-8, 2-3).

Frederick 71, Westminster 50

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Robbie Davis led Frederick with 18 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Anthony Blackwood scored 15 points and had four steals, while Mickey Davis added seven points and seven rebounds for the Cadets (4-3, 2-0).

T. Johnson 70, Urbana 55

IJAMSVILLE, Md. - Jair Brady scored 19 points for Thomas Johnson as the Patriots defeated Urbana in the MVAL Chesapeake.

Drew Gaeng added 12 points and seven assists for the Patriots (7-1, 1-0), while Colby Jackson added 13 points.

Ryan Brandenburg scored 23 points for Urbana (0-9, 0-2)

S. Fulton 58, Everett 51

EVERETT, Pa. - Jay Ifert had 11 points, five rebounds and four steals for Southern Fulton in a victory Everett in the Sideling Hill League.

Eric Truax, Arik Mills and Will Schriver each scored 10 points for the Indians (7-3, 4-2), with Schriver adding nine rebounds and three assists.

J. Buchanan 65, Northern 62

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - James Buchanan inched closer to the .500 mark with a Mid-Penn Colonial win over Northern.

Northern sent JB to the free-throw line 49 times - leading to four players fouling out - and the Rockets hit on 32 of them to help seal the victory.

Shase Hollenshead led the Rockets (6-7, 3-2) with 21 points, while Matt Heckman added 17 and Drew Hostler had 12 to go with 12 rebounds.

Jack Knopp led Northern (4-8, 2-2) with 13 points.
