Council introduces ordinance revisions

January 07, 2004|by BRIAN SHAPPELL

SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Town Council formally introduced revisions to the town Code of Ordinances.

Plans to vote on the revised ordinances through an emergency adoption could not go forward because two council members were absent from Tuesday's meeting.

Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers said the council planned to adopt the updated ordinances but could not because at least four council members would have to vote in favor the adoption. Two of the five council members, Ralph Regan and James LaFemina, did not attend the meeting.

Proposed changes to existing town ordinances, which have not been updated concurrently since 1988, include those dealing with police enforcement laws, election eligibility, snow removal tactics and trash disposal, among other issues, Myers said.

The proposed changes also will eliminate many outdated ordinances that have not been deleted from the books, Myers said. She said many of the changes are "long overdue."

"We're eliminated ordinances like hogs running in the street, those things that are ancient and not worthwhile anymore," she said.
