So, you think you can write song lyrics? Come on, hit us with your best shot. The Herald-Mail will give $50 to the teen who writes the most creative lyrics to the tune of their choice. And spelling counts.

Here are the rules:

  • Contest is open to individuals ages 12 to 18.

  • Work must be 100 percent original. In other words, don't break any copyright laws.

  • All musical genres welcome.

  • No profanity or subject matter unfit for publication in a family newspaper.

  • Enter up to three lyrics set to the same or different tunes.

  • Relatives of Herald-Mail employees are not eligible to win.

  • Submit a recording of someone singing (or rapping) your lyrics to music. Include a written copy of the lyrics.

Mail or bring your entry to The Herald-Mail, 100 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, MD, 21740, by noon Tuesday, Jan. 20. The winning lyrics and a photograph of the songwriter will be published on the Next page Tuesday, Jan. 27.
