Mail Call for 12/30

December 31, 2003

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I am sick to death of hearing fighter jets going over, especially all night long keeping all the good citizens of Hagerstown awake. George W. Shrub, go home."

"I have always enjoyed the Christmas letters of the school children of the Hancock News. Some serious, some funny and some played on my emotions. What really stood out was how few mentioned our Savior's birthday, the real meaning of Christmas. The ones that did must have had some very proud parents. The most important event in history has been ruined for many by commercialism and greed. Maybe in another year, it will be better."

"Not everyone who goes to church understands that it would be easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for the rich to get into heaven. It's just that people tend to feel secure and not realize their need for God, if they have money. 'The poor you will always have with you' simply means that there will always be people who are poor as long as this world exists in its present fallen state. Incidentally, I have yet to find anyone who knows who Ebed-Melech, he is one of my favorite Bible characters and his story can be found in Jeremiah 38."

"I want to ask the Board of Education a question. Do you teach your teachers how to restrain a person a legal way or not? If not, I think you should give them classes to learn it the right way. Sooner or later, one of the teachers or the school is going to get sued. This goes for any school, anywhere."

"I don't understand our justice system. The young sniper just got life with no parole. He should have gotten the death sentence. My mother is serving 30 years to life in prison in Texas for stealing a candy bar. I just don't understand our justice system."

"I was just reading the article in the paper about the Christmas dinner at Robinwood that was free for the poor people. I don't know why they have to take people's pictures, that is probably embarrassing for some people, that they have to go out there. It's nice that they wrote an article about it and I thought it was interesting to read how many people were there, but I just think it was degrading to have them take pictures."

"I am calling about the Mail Call in the paper about the Christmas gift from the SPCA. I certainly agree with the SPCA, as a former employee up here. You can't pick out a pet for someone else. They need to come in themselves, see the pet for themselves and see if they like the personality of the pet. You just can't pick out the pet for someone else. Although, I agree the person should not have gotten rude about it, they should have discussed it very calmly. I now work for Frederick County SPCA and I guarantee you, their shelter is the same way."

"I was the one who called about this country needing to concentrate on bin Laden and someone called regarding that. I want to say that while this country has been supposedly looking for bin Laden, we haven't done a very good job in finding him. That is what I meant, that we need to concentrate on finding him. If we were able to find Saddam, I think we should be able to find bin Laden."

"Major complaints against so many police cruisers everywhere. I feel like we are under siege by the police. We have city, the sheriff's department and we have state troopers. Every time you turn around, everywhere you go, every corner you turn, there is a police officer. During the holidays especially, I find it creating a feeling of a police state. I know we are in a heightened alert, but I don't think the police officers will be able to stop anything."

"It was in the paper, what you could do with your old used Christmas cards, places to donate them. We have some really beautiful ones this year and we would like to donate them to someone."

"For the woman complaining about businesses not shoveling the back of their businesses. It's probably because it's not a public walkway. If we didn't shovel behind it, that means that you are trespassing, then maybe you need to find another way to walk your kids to school."

"Please give the people at the SPCA credit for a wonderful, clean organization that they are running. I had to have my 5-year-old dog put to sleep on Sept. 30. The next day when I called them, they gave me a really nice dog. My track record is good with animals."
