Assault charges filed

The Hagerstown Police Department charged a 26-year-old man in connection with a suspected case of child abuse.

Police charged the man, who was not identified to protect the identity of the victim, with first- and second-degree assault and first- and second-degree child abuse. Police allege the man assaulted his 3-year-old son.

Police said a social worker from the Department of Social Services contacted investigators Saturday morning after the victim was treated in the Washington County Hospital Emergency Room for a fractured right leg.

Police said the man is being held at the Washington County Detention Center in lieu of $20,000 bond.

Woman charged

FREDERICK, Md. - A Frederick woman faces drug charges following an alleged hit-and-run crash Saturday, the Frederick Police Department said.


Lisa Bowins, of 750 Carroll Parkway, Apt. 8, was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, driving while impaired by drugs and a controlled dangerous substance, failure to stop after unattended vehicle accident and driving while suspended for failure to pay a fine, police said.

Driver faces charges

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police said a Greencastle, Pa., man was charged with fleeing and eluding police and other offenses after a pursuit early Sunday.

Police said Daniel Roberts, 24, address unavailable, also was charged with recklessly endangering another person and driving under the influence in the incident, which began at about 2 a.m. on U.S. 30 near Ragged Edge Road. He was arraigned before District Justice Larry Meminger, police said.

Roberts allegedly was clocked doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone and failed to heed warning lights and sirens when police tried to pull him over, police said. A tire deflation device was used, but the vehicle continued to head west before becoming inoperable as the driver tried to go southbound on Interstate 81.

Death investigated

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the death of a 28-year-old man whose body was discovered in his Greene Township home Friday afternoon.

Police said a family member and the man's landlord discovered the body at about 1:30 p.m. in his residence in the 3000 block of Letterkenny Road. Police said there was no sign of foul play and Franklin County Deputy Coroner Kenneth L. Peiffer pronounced him dead at the scene.

An autopsy was performed Sunday, but no cause of death was determined, according to police. Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said a determination of the cause of death is pending the results of toxicological tests, which may take six to eight weeks.

Man seriously hurt

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - A 38-year-old Hedgesville man was in critical condition Sunday night after he lost control of his vehicle and struck a car on Back Creek Valley Road Saturday night, a West Virginia State Police spokesman said.

Mark Morris, address unavailable, was traveling north on Back Creek Valley Road about two miles south of W.Va. 9 west when his passenger-side wheels went off the road, said Sgt. C.C. Morton.

When Morris corrected his vehicle, it went into the southbound lane striking a 1979 F-150 pickup truck being driven by Roger W. Collis, 37, of Hedgesville, Morton said.

Morris was taken to Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center, where he was listed in critical condition Sunday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Collis declined treatment, Morton said.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Two people were thrown from a vehicle Saturday night after it went off Charles Town Road and struck two trees, said a Berkeley County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

The 11:15 p.m. crash occurred when the vehicle left the right edge of the road and hit at least two trees, said Deputy B.J. Wright.

The driver was taken to City Hospital and a passenger was flown to Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center, Wright said.

Further details were not available Sunday.
