A Hagerstown man who was severely burned in a gasoline explosion on Frederick Street in September died Sunday, Hagerstown Fire Marshal Tom Brown said Monday.

Arley Lee McNeill Jr., 22, of 178 S. Prospect St., died at Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, where he was taken after the Sept. 30 accident.

McNeill was under a car attempting to remove a gasoline tank at the Antietam Cab Co. garage at 261 Frederick St.

Some of the gas remaining in the tank spilled onto the floor, and the vapors were ignited by a nearby shop light, Brown said.

McNeill, who was not an Antietam Cab employee, was burned over 70 percent of his body, according to fire department and medical reports.

Brown said he had ruled the fire as accidental. The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner indicated it would perform an autopsy.
