SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg boys basketball team ended a season-opening, four-game losing streak by avenging one of those losses, pulling out a 41-38 victory over the Tuscarora Titans on Monday.

Tuscarora beat the Leopards 63-45 on Thursday.

"It's always nice to get a win," Smithsburg coach Eric Gerber said. "We played a lot better against them this time than we did down there. We really emphasized rebounding and we are really rebounding much better every night."

Smithsburg (1-4) held a 35-29 lead through three quarters, but the Titans cut the deficit to one with 3:43 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Drew Crawford hit a 3-pointer to extend Smithsburg's lead to 38-34 and the Leopards iced the game with three free throws in the final minute.

Crawford scored 14 points, while Nate Steelman collected 13 points, five assists and five rebounds for Smithsburg. Matt Feiser and T.J. Bowser each had six rebounds.

Danny Reed had 11 points and Danny Edwards had six rebounds for Tuscarora (1-3).

"We just had trouble attacking their 2-3 zone," Tuscarora coach Dan Wagner said. "We just relied too much on our outside shot. I thought that Smithsburg handled our pressure better than during our previous meeting last week."
