Armory could find new life as builders' training center

December 21, 2003|by LAURA ERNDE

A local contractors' group might revive a plan to renovate the old Hagerstown Armory building into a building trades training center.

The Cumberland Valley Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors recently met with state officials about the possibility, Sen. Donald F. Munson, R-Washington, said Thursday.

The state-owned building at 328 N. Potomac St. has been vacant for about six years.

Two years ago, ABC struck a deal with the City of Hagerstown to renovate the building. Under the plan, the city would have turned over the building to the nonprofit ABC for $1.

But the Maryland Board of Public Works refused to give the building to the city, citing the need for public bids.

The state then did not receive any bids for the 77-year-old building and have put it on the market.
