SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Library building fund has received two foundation grants and two private family donations totaling $55,000, according to Judith Ferro, president of the library's board of directors.

The Delaplaine Foundation Inc., based in Frederick, Md., awarded $25,000 to the fund to support programs that strengthen educational advancement, the arts and sciences, historical preservation and spiritual enlightenment.

A $20,000 award came from the Marion and Henry Knott Foundation, an independent foundation established in Maryland to promote Roman Catholic activities and other charitable, cultural, educational, and health and human service organizations.

The two family donations totaled $10,000, Ferro said.

Holiday fund-raisers, including the Christmas open house tour, Chili Festi-Bowl, an evening at Uno's and various raffles, have brought in another $4,600.
