Mock election set for Thursday

Washington County voters can try out new electronic voting machines during a mock election Thursday, election officials said.

Voting machines will be set up at two locations in downtown Hagerstown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., said Sharon Mackereth, election data applications specialist.

The mock polls will be at the Board of Elections, 35 W. Washington St., Room 101, and the County Administration Building, 100 W. Washington St.

Ballots will contain fake candidates such as George Washington, Cal Ripken and Tom Clancy, Mackereth said.

People can try out the machines even if they're not yet registered to vote, she said.

"When they see how simple it is, maybe they'll sign up," Mackereth said.

The deadline to register for the March 2 primary election is Feb. 10, she said.

Registration forms will be available at the mock polls.

Mock absentee ballots will be distributed at Potomac Towers so election officials can test that part of the system as well, she said.

Election officials will compile the results to allow them to practice using the new system.
