John E. Miller Sr.


SHARPSBURG - John Elmer Miller Sr., 79, of 4853 Churchey Road, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 23, 1924, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late George Elmer and Julia Leonard Miller.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Louise Knode Miller, in 2000.

He retired from F.O. Day Contractors in Rockville, Md.

He was a member of Sharpsburg Lutheran Church.

He was past president of Sharpsburg Lions Club; Keedysville Ruritan Club; and former manager of Keedysville Ruritan Little League.

He is survived by three daughters, Sandra J. Henson and Susan R. McGlaughlin, both of Sharpsburg, and Shirley A. Cook of Boonsboro; four sons, John E. Miller Jr., Ronald E. Miller and Samuel G. Miller, all of Sharpsburg, and Charles R. Miller of Falling Waters, W.Va.; four foster daughters, Connie E. Church of Fairplay, Bonnie K. Miller of Indiana, and Doris J. Stallings and Virginia M. Keesecker, both of Sharpsburg; two foster sons, Samuel G. Thomas of Boonsboro, and Raymond F. Thomas of Brunswick, Md.; one sister, Evelyn McAfee; 24 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; eight foster grandchildren; and eight foster great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one foster daughter, Cindy L. Thomas; one foster son, Henry M. Keesecker; two sisters, Edith McAfee and Anna Mae Thomas; one brother, Wayne Miller; one half brother, George Miller Jr.; and one grandson.

Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro. The Rev. Richard Hembrock will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Stanley L. Kretsinger Jr.


Stanley Leroy Kretsinger Jr., 81, of 326 Belview Ave., Hagerstown, Md., passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born in Hagerstown on Tuesday, March 14, 1922, he was the son of the late Stanley Leroy Kretsinger Sr. and Helen J. LaMar Kretsinger.

He was the widower of Mary V. Kretsinger, who passed away in 1996. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Day Kretsinger.

He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft, retiring after 43 years. After retirement, he continued as a consultant for Saab Aircraft in Sweden. He also was employed by the Redmen in Williamsport, Md. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Italy. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown; Morris Frock American Legion Post 42; a life member of Red Men Tribe 84; a member of Loyal Order of Moose 2462 of Williamsport; BPO Elks 378, where he was a 50-year member and life member of VFW of Greencastle, Pa.; and a member of the FOE of Hagerstown.

He is survived by daughter, Deborah A. Wilson of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughter, Sandra S. Kolodner of Sparks, Md.; daughter, Shelley L. Tinney of New Market, Md.; and daughter, Karen K. Kretsinger of Fayetteville, Pa. He also is survived by eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, William Luther of the Western Maryland Center.

Services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown, on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Anne Weatherholt officiating.

Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. N., Hagerstown.

Ethel H. Hawkins


RANSON, W.Va. - Ethel H. Hawkins, 89, of Ranson, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Blue Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Charles Town, W.Va.

Born Oct. 5, 1914, in Petersburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Dennis and Mary Elizabeth Bishop Holt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Hawkins, in 1999.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by two sons, John D. Hawkins of Charles Town, and Henry A. Hawkins of Ranson; four grandchildren, John S. Hawkins, Robert A. Hawkins, Elizabeth Hawkins, and Donald E. Hawkins Jr.; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one son, Donald E. Hawkins.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. Dr. Wyman Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg, W.Va.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kenneth K. Young


CABINS, W.Va. - Kenneth K. Young, 82, of Cabins, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born July 28, 1921, in Kimberly, W.Va., he was the son of the late William M. and Evelyn Stanley Young.

He retired from Union Carbide.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Potomac Valley Baptist Church in Maysville, W.Va.
