Sunday stabbing continues pattern at correctional center

The Maryland Correctional Training Center's pace of one stabbing per month since mid-2003 continued with another incident Sunday evening.

An inmate, whom a Division of Correction spokesman would not identify, was stabbed in the neck as he was leaving MCTC's dining hall. It was the fifth stabbing at the prison since July 3.

Ron Leverette, public information officer for the Maryland Division of Correction, said the inmate was attacked by at least one other inmate at approximately 6:35 p.m. The victim had a stab wound on the right side of his neck from "some type of fabricated, crude weapon," also referred to as a shank, Leverette said.

Details of the incident were "sketchy" Monday, Leverette said.

Leverette said he could not release the names of anyone involved until an internal investigation was completed. Leverette said each man was serving a seven-year prison term at MCTC - the victim on drug trafficking and assault charges, and the alleged assailant on narcotics and weapons violations.

The victim was taken to Washington County Hospital for treatment of the neck wound, and the DOC would not provide information on his condition until the investigation was concluded, Leverette said.

Leverette said corrections officials were taking steps to address the stabbing problem.

"There is a concern," he said.

On Oct. 21, Damien Frazier was stabbed at least once during an incident in the medium-security Housing Unit 1. Frazier suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at Washington County Hospital.

A stabbing incident was reported two weeks earlier, but Leverette would not release information on that investigation, including the exact date.

On Aug. 16, an inmate was found in his cell with stab wounds on his back and neck. On July 3, an inmate was stabbed on the side of the head with a shank during an altercation inside the dining hall.

Leverette said he was unable to release information on the previous stabbing investigations because he did not have access to the reports late Monday afternoon.

MCTC is a medium-security prison on Roxbury Road that provides education and vocational training to male inmates.
