Portion of Broadfording Road to remain closed

November 22, 2003|by TARA REILLY

A portion of Broadfording Road will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time because of problems between Washington County and the contractor hired to perform repairs to the Broadfording Road Bridge, County Commissioners Vice President William J. Wivell said.

The commissioners awarded a $693,000 contract to BEKA Industries of Pasadena, Md., in April to repair the stone arch bridge.

Wivell said the contractor got a late start on the project, and by the time the work was to be begun, one of the arches had partially collapsed.

He said that caused another delay in the project.

Wivell said the county is trying to work out some issues with the contractor.

"It's just not proceeding as it's supposed to be proceeding at this point," he said. "It's just not going well right now."

Wivell said he did not know when the project would be completed or when the road would reopen.
