William C. VanDerBos


HANCOCK - William Charles VanDerBos, 50, of Western Pike and formerly of Rockford, Mich., died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 19, 1953, in Grand Rapids, Mich., he was the son of William J. and Shirley M. Knight VanDerBos of Rockford, Mich.

He had been a welder for Grove Manufacturing.

He was an Episcopalian.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 29 years, Theresa M. Cohill VanDerBos; one son, Jason VanDerBos of Hancock; one sister, Barbara J. Groh of Spring Lake, Mich.; one brother, James E. VanDerBos of Rockford; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home in Hancock. Mark Willoughby and Malcolm Willoughby will officiate.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.




Christopher R. Custer


FREDERICK, Md. - Christopher Repplier Custer, 73, of Parkview Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born April 13, 1930, in East Orange, N.J., he was the son of the late Warren Anderson and Adrienne Wellens Custer.

He had owned and operated Custer Toyota, later known as Fredericktowne Toyota, until his retirement. He had manufactured the "Rotus," a custom-made automobile, operating in the Hagerstown area.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by one daughter, Cynthia A. Fass of Montville, N.J.; one son, Timothy J. Custer of Frederick; one sister, Fanny Clark of Montclair, N.J.; one brother, Peter Custer of Rhode Island; four grandchildren; and his former wife, Patricia J. Custer of Frederick.

A memorial service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Frederick. The Rev. Andrew B. Jones will officiate.

Burial will be private.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Frederick County, 5712-D Industry Lane, Frederick, MD 21704.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home in Frederick.




Jane F. Barnes


JEFFERSON, Md. - Jane Frances Barnes, 81, of Jefferson, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 30, 1922, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Columbus and Sarah Plume Toms.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert Barnes.

She was a seamstress for J.M. Brucheimer in Frederick, Md., for 15 years.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Jefferson.

She is survived by two children, Carol Huffer of Jefferson and Robert A. Barnes of Calabash, N.C.; four grandchildren; Angela C. Mavis and Wesley S. Shewbridge, both of Frederick, Michael A. Barnes of Walkersville, Md., and Robert R. Barnes of Raleigh, N.C.; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by six sisters and brothers, Gladys, Rachael, Lydia, Lewis, Hampton, and Chester.Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick. The Rev. Virginia Price will officiate. Entombment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick.The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Frank L. Miller


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Frank L. "Goose" Miller, 79, of Providence Place and formerly of 212 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at Shook Home in Chambersburg.

Born March 29, 1924, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Robert C. and Mildred Snyder Miller.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara T. Ring Miller, in 1988. They were married in 1945.

He retired in 1973 from the Printing Shop at Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a Protestant.

He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge 600 of Chambersburg; Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46 of Chambersburg; and Franklin Fire Co. of Chambersburg.

He is survived by one son, David L. Miller of Chambersburg; four sisters, Ida Woods and Mary Norcross, both of Chambersburg, Betty Stake of Fayetteville, Pa., and Florence Moyer of Selinsgrove, Pa.; two brothers, Charles Miller and Jacob Miller, both of Chambersburg; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald F. Miller and Jeffrey L. Miller.

Services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home in Chambersburg. The Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery in Chambersburg, with military graveside services by Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Monday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Michael L. Shawyer


CAVETOWN - Michael Lee Shawyer, 22, of 22426 Goose St., died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, in Baltimore.

Born Jan. 17, 1981, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Garie Eugene Shawyer Sr. and Ruth Ann Gossard Shawyer of Cavetown.

He was employed by Concrete General in Gaithersburg, Md.
