Former park superintendent honored

November 21, 2003

Recently retired C&O Canal National Historical Park Superintendent Douglas D. Faris has received the 2003 National Capital Region Superintendent of the Year award, presented during a ceremony at Ferry Hill in Sharpsburg, the former headquarters for the C&O Canal.

The award recognized Faris' accomplishments during the nine years he was superintendent of the C&O Canal. The award further acknowledged Faris for developing partnerships, establishing the volunteer bike patrol which has grown to include more than 200 volunteers, and obtaining an agreement with the federal prisons in Cumberland, Md., to provide regular assistance from prisoners to help maintain park resources.

Faris was praised for his initiation of fund-raising programs that focused on community foundations in each of the counties along the canal to attract the attention of potential donors for local projects along the park.

He was commended for his commitment in looking for opportunities to improve the park.

Faris' retirement is effective in December. He served 30 years with the National Park Service.
