Annual Toys for Tots campaign under way

The annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign in Washington County is under way, with items being collected through Dec. 15.

Making sure every child has at least one toy under the tree at Christmas is the group's goal, according to Philip Stotelmyer, drive organizer.

Toys are donated or purchased with money that is donated. Organizers encourage churches, civic groups, Scouts and others to support the effort.

Toys for Tots has been a Marine Corps Reserve project for more than 50 years. It began operating in Washington County in 1997, through the Marine Corps League in Hagerstown.

The toys will be distributed Friday, Dec. 19, in an empty storefront at the Long Meadow Shopping Center. Parents or other recipients must have a letter from the Washington County Department of Social Services to be eligible.

For more information about how to donate to Toys for Tots or to have toys picked up, call Stotelmyer at 301-790-0296.
