Woman remains in critical condition

WILLIAMSPORT - A Williamsport woman who was burned Monday in an apparent suicide attempt remained in critical condition at a Baltimore hospital Thursday.

A spokeswoman at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center said Mary Catherine Widmyer, 51, was in critical condition Thursday evening.

Assistant State Fire Marshal Ed Ernst said Widmyer doused herself in gasoline and set herself on fire in the Byron Memorial Park parking lot at 5:22 p.m. Monday.

Widmyer had second- and third-degree burns to at least 75 percent of her body, Ernst had said.

Fire causes heavy damage to W.Va. home

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A fire at a house along Box Factory Road between Middleway, W.Va., and Summit Point, W.Va., in Jefferson County caused about $60,000 damage Thursday morning, a fire official said.

The fire was discovered after someone heard a loud cracking noise near the front door of the house, said Ed Smith, chief of Independent Fire Co.


The fire spread up the wall of the house and into the attic and living room area, Smith said.

The house was owned by Dewey Roberts, who lived there with his wife, daughter and granddaughter, Smith said.

The family's dog and cat died in the fire, which was reported at about 11:51 a.m., Smith said. Roberts' wife was bitten by the dog while she was trying to rescue it, Smith said.

Firefighters from Independent Fire Co., Citizens Fire Co., South Berkeley, Berryville, Va., and Clearbrook, Va. responded.

Police looking for man in August shooting

Hagerstown City Police are asking residents to help them find a man charged with attempted murder in an August shooting outside the Neighborhood Inn on North Mulberry Street.

John Allen Stroud, also known as "J.D.," 26, has a last known address of 100-13 Casals Place, 12C, Bronx, N.Y. He is described as black, 5 feet 4 inches tall, 180 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

An arrest warrant issued in early September charges Stroud in the non-fatal shootings of two men on Aug. 28. at about 11:15 p.m., outside the Neighborhood Inn.

Tony Lamar Moorehead, 25, of the 600 block of North Prospect Street, was struck with a single bullet in the abdomen. George "Jamal" Smith, 30, of no fixed address, was shot in the leg, police said.

Stroud is charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree assault.

He also was charged with single counts of reckless endangerment, carrying a handgun, and use of a handgun in the commission of a felony, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm within city limits.

Drugs, cash seized from Frederick home

FREDERICK, Md. - Frederick City Police seized marijuana, scales and packaging materials from a home on Schaffer Drive on Wednesday night, and charged the homeowners with drug possession.

Jody Ann Delli, 28, and Massimiliano Delli, 34, both of 1181 Schaffer Drive, Frederick, were charged with marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia possession, according to a news release.

Police said they had received reports of drug activity and minors drinking alcohol at the residence. Due to conditions inside the home, the city Codes and Permits Department and the Department of Social Services were contacted, police said.

Crews respond to Berkeley Co. barn fire

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Firefighters were on the scene of a barn fire on the 400 block of Cunningham Drive late Thursday night, according to a dispatcher with Berkeley County's 911 center.

The fire was called in at 7:38 p.m. and units from the Bedington Volunteer Fire Department and other departments were still there more than three hours later, the dispatcher said.
