Sisters Louella Little, 100, and Leola Ott, 94, remember helping their father Thomas Shives lock boats through the C&O Canal in the Hancock area. The Hagerstown area women recalled that in addition to selling bread, butter, buttermilk, and smearcase to the boatsmen, the Shives family also sold fish. "We'd catch fish and sell 'em. We'd get eels, big ones and little ones, and sell them to the boatsmen. They didn't have time to fish!"
