Preparedness day set at medical center

The second annual Citizens' Emergency Preparedness Day on Saturday, Nov. 15, will have something for everyone who wants to learn what to do in a crisis, whether local or global.

Held again this year at the Robinwood Medical Center, blue or silver entrances, the event begins at 9 a.m. and will conclude at 1 p.m.

Last year, approximately 300 people attended the event, according to organizer Verna Brown, Emergency Management Agency coordinator in Washington County.

The event began as a spinoff of President Bush's call for communities to be prepared for emergencies.

This year there will be free workshops on chemical safety, home fire escape planning, pet emergency preparedness, evacuation, quarantines, severe weather, terrorism and how to perform CPR.

To enroll in the CPR classes, pre-registration is needed. Call 240-313-2930 and leave a message.

Instruction on how to prepare a family disaster kit will be given, Brown said.

The seminars will be presented by organizations that work together during emergencies, including the American Red Cross, the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, Hagerstown Fire Department, the local humane society, Washington County Hospital and Washington County Special Operations, Brown said.

Table displays are expected to be staffed by representatives of Neighborhood Watch, Hagerstown Fire Police, hospital volunteers and other groups.

The Robin's Nest will be open for food and beverage purchases throughout the event.

Patients invited to 'joint' reunion

The Center for Joint Surgery and Sports Medicine is hosting a joint reunion celebration for patients who have had any type of joint replacement by Drs. Tom Altizer or Ralph Salvagno.

The reunion will be held Sunday, Nov. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m., at The Clarion.

This event is intended to give patients an opportunity to share their experiences and have a good time.

Coalition coordinates Ramadan event

A Taste of the Blessings of Ramadan will be shared on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Islamic Society of Western Maryland, 2036 Day Road, Hagerstown.

Coordinated by The Interfaith Coalition of Washington County, the event is designed to educate about the holy season of Ramadan, which is from the end of October through November. It includes a month of fasting between sunrise and sunset each day.

As a way to help others understand and appreciate this religious observance, members of the Islamic Society are opening their mosque for an open house with conversation and a meal after sunset.

For reservations, call Pastor Ed Poling at 301-733-3565 or Dr. Shahab Siddiqui at 301-791-2510.

The evening is a continuing effort of Washington County Council of Churches, the Islamic Society of Western Maryland, Congregation B'Nai Abraham, and others interested in interfaith dialogue.
