Man steals, then ditches, taxi cab

Hagerstown City Police said a man forced a woman cab driver out of her car early Monday and took the cab.

Police later located the cab a few blocks away.

According to the police report, a 31-year-old woman was taking a rider to the American Convenience Store on South Potomac Street at about 3 a.m. when she picked up a second rider at the intersection of Antietam and South Potomac streets. After the first passenger got out, the new rider moved to the front passenger seat. The driver took him to the first block of Wayside Avenue, but when they arrived, the man said he didn't think his friend was home, so he directed the driver to Matthew Avenue.

When the driver pulled into the rear of 62 E. Antietam St., the man pulled out money and asked for change. The driver was making change when the man began yelling, and then told the driver to get out of the cab.

Officers found the cab, but not the man who took it, behind 140 S. Potomac St.

Police described the robber as white, in his early 30s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, and weighing about 200 pounds with a "big belly." The man had ear-length brown hair, chin stubble, and was wearing a red T-shirt with a black and white checkered flannel.

Police ask that anyone with information about the crime call investigators at 301-790-3700, ext. 234.

Man faces theft, burglary charges

FREDERICK, Md. - A Walkersville, Md., man was charged with burglary and related offenses after a theft at a Frederick store early Sunday, according to a release from the Frederick County Sheriff's Department.

Michael James Mende, 22, was charged with second- and fourth-degree burglary, malicious destruction of property, theft, second-degree assault and resisting arrest.
