STATE LINE, Pa. - Police spent several hours Friday night searching for a man who tried to rob a couple outside a restaurant and shot at them with what officers believe was a pellet gun.

The attempted robbery happened outside Black Steer Family Steakhouse Restaurant in State Line around 7:30 p.m.

Cpl. Chris Howard of the Washington County Sheriff's Department said the gunman approached a couple in a Chevrolet pickup and demanded money. When the couple refused and started to pull away, the robber shot at the truck and fled on foot, Howard said.

Neither the 78-year-old man nor the 42-year-old woman in the truck was injured, Howard said.

An hour or so after the robbery, police cars lined the steakhouse entrance. A Maryland State Police helicopter circled above, using a spotlight to illuminate the surrounding area.

A Hagerstown Police Department K-9 was brought to the scene to try to pick up a scent, and officers with the Sheriff's Department and Pennsylvania State Police searched the area on foot.
