Some winners not so woolly

November 07, 2003

Not all entries in the annual Woolly Bear Contest are actually woolly bears, Gerald W. Spessard, business manager of J. Gruber's Hagers-Town Town and Country Almanack said Thursday.

The nation's second-oldest almanac sponsors an annual Woolly Bear Contest and makes a prediction about the weather based on folklore about the black-and-brown caterpillars.

While candidates for the contest's "Cutest and Cuddliest" category must be woolly bears, judges allow caterpillars of other types to be entered in the "Biggest and Woolliest" category, he said.

Spessard said he did not know the judges were allowing other caterpillars until he was asked about it Thursday.
