The Hagerstown Police Department is investigating the death of a homeless man this weekend.

Police said officers found the body of Woodrow E. Taylor, 49, in an alley at the rear of 24 N. Jonathan St. at 8:34 a.m. Sunday. Police said the nature of his death was unknown Sunday.

Taylor's body has been sent to the Maryland Office of the Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

Police are asking anyone with information on Taylor's death or anyone who had contact with him within 24 hours of his death to contact Investigators George Brandt and Shawn Schultz at 301-790-3700, ext. 234.

Several of Taylor's friends gathered at the Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown Sunday for the REACH Cold Weather Shelter opening service. REACH officials said Taylor stayed at the shelter within the last week.

"He was a good old boy," Steve Creager said.

Steve Brown said Taylor was someone "everyone knew" because he sat on the benches outside the courthouse and talked to people. Brown and Carol LeDeay said they were among the last to see Taylor, on Saturday afternoon.

"He was laughing and going on and just having a good time," LeDeay said.
