The Washington County Economic Summit, featuring economic forecaster Anirban Basu, will be held Thursday, Nov. 13, at 5:30 p.m. at Fountain Head Country Club in Hagerstown.

Basu will discuss economic trends, what's expected in the future and how economic factors will affect local businesses, according to a Chamber news release.

Basu is chief executive officer of Optimal Solutions Group in Baltimore and teaches international economics at Towson University. He applies economic and public policy theory to issues facing business, government and nonprofit organizations.

Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce President Fred Teeter said in the news release that every year in November Basu "delivers what many call the definitive State of the Economy address in Maryland."

Teeter said Basu recently addressed a state conference on Maryland's tourism and economy and was the keynote speaker at a meeting of the Maryland Economic Development Association.

"We're pleased to have him with us for an economic look at Washington County's business future," Teeter said.

Washington County Economic Development Commission Executive Director Tim Troxell said in the news release that Basu specializes in economic forecasting and consulting. He said Basu applies economic and public policy theory to issues facing business, government and nonprofit organizations.

"He has conducted economic impact analyses for numerous entities, including co-developing an impact model for Maryland's State Highway Administration," Teeter said. "He also co-authored Baltimore City's strategic economic plan, and authored the industrial development plan that currently guides economic development efforts in Southern Maryland."

Miss Maryland Marina Harrison will also be a special guest at the November meeting. Harrison is scheduled to sing the national anthem.

The summit will be co-hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Commission. The Herald-Mail Co. and members of the Washington County banking community are sponsoring the event.
