Mary E. Jones


MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Mary E. "Betty" Jones, 77, of 229 S. Fayette St., died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Chambersburg Hospital in Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Dec. 10, 1925, in Cove Gap, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Wallace and Mary E. Riley Cuff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Jones Sr., in 1997. They were married Jan. 3, 1951.

She was last employed by Five Forks Packing, retiring in 1995.

She was a member of Love Temple-King's Apostles Church World Ministry in Cove Gap, Pa.

She was a member of South Central AARP.

She is survived by three daughters, Sandra E. Burhanan and Nancy L. Jones, both of Mercersburg, and Florence M. Jones of Biglerville, Pa.; three sons, James L. Jones Jr., Charles W. Jones and Curtis E. Jones, all of Mercersburg; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and stepsisters and stepbrothers.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen L. Lee.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home in Mercersburg. The Revs. Patricia A. Tillman and Dwayne Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Union Cemetery in Mercersburg.

The family will receive friends Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. and Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.




Lela E. Beard


TOWSON, Md. - Lela Elizabeth Brewer Beard of Towson died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin E. Beard.

She is survived by three children, Richard L. Beard of Newport News, Va., and Linda S. Dusel and Rebecca L. Beard, both of Baltimore; three grandchildren; and a niece.

Services will be today at noon at the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Ruxton, Md.

Burial will be Monday at noon at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Arrangements are by Brian T. Chisholm Funeral Services of Dulaney Valley in Timonium, Md.




Ronald E. Rook


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Ronald E. Rook, 66, of 12857 Mentzer Gap Road, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Oct. 17, 1937, in Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert Frederick and Beulah M. Woodring Rook.

He attended Waynesboro schools.

Prior to his retirement in 2002, he was a security officer for Science Application International Corp. in Frederick, Md.

He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1191 and Fraternal Order of Eagles 1758, all of Waynesboro; Rouzerville Fish and Game Association; and National Rifle Association, among other organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Pepple Rook, whom he married Oct. 14, 1977; a daughter, Rhonda L. DaSilva of Frederick; two sisters, Dorothy J. Sweet of Lexington, Va., and Donna L. Rook of Waynesboro; three brothers, Robert F. Rook Jr. of York, Pa., and Charles D. Rook and William G. Rook, both of Waynesboro; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley A. Rook.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home in Waynesboro. The Rev. Eugene M. Cline will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.




Robert L. Hutson


A memorial service for Robert Lloyd Hutson, 50, of Hagerstown, who died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, will be Saturday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m. at Mount Calvary Church of God in Clear Spring.




Mary E. Derflinger


BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Mary Elizabeth Custer Derflinger, 90, of Bunker Hill, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Grenich Care Home.

Born Sept. 27, 1913, in Darkesville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Reuben and Fannie Virginia DeHaven Custer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Derflinger.

She was employed for 40 years by Interwoven Mills and Perfection Garment.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

She was a volunteer of Meals-on-Wheels and Senior Citizen Center and a member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, American Red Cross, where she assisted with the Bloodmobile, and Women of the Moose, among other organizations.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, including Linda L. Custer, Phyllis Williams, Edgar W. Custer and Jerry L. Derflinger; a great-niece; and two great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul F. Custer.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. G. Edward Grove will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bessie C. Bowers


SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Bessie C. Bowers, 76, of Shepherdstown, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Nov. 8, 1926, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Louis and Bertha Melott Kenney.
