Mail Call

October 31, 2003

"I am a senior and I read in the paper the other day where a deputy hit a car in the rear and knocked it into the traffic and then it hit another car. But yet, the deputy wasn't charged. If that was someone like me that did that, they would have taken my license. He didn't have his car under control for some reason. If you hit someone in the back end like that, you are usually charged with not being able to control your car. But not him. Why?"

"Thursday, Senators voted 60-34 to raise their salaries $3,300. How did our Maryland senators vote? It was announced recently that Social Security recipients would receive a raise of two plus percent. At the same time, Medicare premiums would be raised 13 plus percent. You do the math. Would you be ahead even $33? How much did your prescriptions, real estate taxes, cable, electric and insurance go up this year? Elections are coming up in 2004."

"I can't understand why they changed trick-or-treat to Friday. All these years, it has always been Thursday night. I think this is one of the worst decisions this city has made."

"I take offense to the manor in which Tara Riley reported on the County Commissioners hearing to fund new schools, which would be needed to accommodate the county's growth. Ms. Riley sensationalized Gene Albert, the only builder who criticized the fee. All contractors who spoke that night, even Albert, admitted that new schools needed to be funded. The others suggested some possible changes to the policy but applauded the County Commissioners for finally stepping forward to meet the needs of school system infrastructure. I know conflict sells newspapers, but it should not be falsely emphasized for that purpose. Reporting should be factual and provide all the details correctly."

"I was walking past some parked cars in an elementary parking lot. The people inside these cars were waiting for their children, I would imagine. Well there was one car where the driver was smoking and there was a smell of an alcoholic beverage. This is very sad to think that this person was waiting to pick up their child."

"I was wondering why nobody has put a set fee on landlords charging pet deposits? My friend just rented a house for $800 a month, had to pay another $300 deposit for a dog, but now they have a cat and they want to charge him another $800 for the cat. This is very wrong."

"I too had someone come up to me when I was parked in the square and ask me for money for a meal. I offered to go buy them something at Burger King and he said no. Some of these people I don't feel sorry for, they only want the money for cigarettes or liquor, not a meal."

"After watching the council meeting on Monday night, I think it's pathetic that three members of the council are giving money to the homeless, which are financed by a lot of churches. They took the money away from a lot of children in the community. I think we should remember this and remember these three people when we vote in two years."
