Safeway ad not a sign

October 30, 2003|by JULIE E. GREENE

Although a billboard on Burhans Boulevard advertises Safeway meat, the grocery chain does not have plans to open a store in Washington County, a company spokesman said Wednesday.

Safeway's advertising agency is based on the West Coast and is not familiar with the grocer's market area, said Craig Muckle, public affairs manager for Safeway's Eastern Division. That explains the billboard on Burhans near Wesel Boulevard, he said.

There are several Safeway stores in Frederick County, Md., including one in Middletown, according to www.safeway.com.
