Boy, 8, loses part of his ear from dog bite

WILLIAMSPORT - An 8-year-old boy lost part of an ear Sunday when he was bitten by a shepherd-husky mix after going into the dog's kennel to retrieve a ball, Washington County Humane Society Executive Director Paul Miller said.

The boy, who lives at 40 W. Potomac St., underwent surgery at Washington County Hospital on Sunday evening, Miller said.

There were no previous complaints against the dog, Miller said.

Dog owner Brian Hoffman of 38 W. Potomac St., was told to keep the kennel locked from now on.

City man charged with 17 drug counts

A Hagerstown man was at the Washington County Detention Center on Monday charged with 17 counts of distribution and possession of crack cocaine and maintaining a common nuisance.

Hasheem Edward Scatliffe, 24, of 306 S. Cannon Ave., was charged after a two-week investigation by the Washington County Narcotics Task Force, according to Washington County District Court records.


An informant working with police bought crack cocaine from Scatliffe, also known as "Poor Boy," on three occasions, court records allege.

On Friday, police searched the apartment where he was living with his girlfriend. They allegedly seized individually wrapped bags of crack cocaine in the freezer, $1,200 in cash in the bedroom closet and a loaded handgun under the mattress, court records allege.

Scatliffe was being held Monday on $250,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Nov. 19.

Man wounded in shooting improves

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A condition of a man who suffered a gunshot wound to the face at a strip bar and nightclub Saturday was upgraded Monday.

Shawn Hailey, 22, of Winchester, Va., was listed in fair condition at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., Monday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Berkeley County Sheriff's deputies said Hailey was shot during an altercation outside KC's Leather & Lace club south of Martinsburg early Saturday. Deputies said a fight inside the club ended up in the parking lot, where several shots were fired.

Deputies said Darrin K. Edwards, 28, of Stephens City, Va., also suffered a gunshot wound that required surgery Saturday.

A City Hospital spokeswoman said Edwards was released Sunday.

Man pushes way into home, steals cash

Hagerstown City Police were investigating a report of a home invasion on Woodland Way early Monday.

A woman in the 800 block of Woodland Way told police that she heard a noise at her rear kitchen door at about 12:30 a.m. When she opened the door, a man pushed his way inside, causing her to fall to the floor, police said.

The man stole cash and other items from her purse, which was on the kitchen table, and then ran, police said.

An ambulance was called, but the woman refused treatment, police said.

Garage sustains heavy damage in fire

SMITHSBURG - A large garage sustained extensive damage in a fire Sunday night, according to Smithsburg Fire Co. Chief Ronnie Jeter.

Officials from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office said they believe the fire was intentionally set.

Firefighters called to 40 Crystal Falls Drive at 6:40 p.m. Sunday found the garage in flames, Jeter said.

The Maryland Fire Marshal's Office said the fire caused approximately $20,000 in damage.

Firefighters from Leitersburg, Mount Aetna, Funkstown, Special Operations and Waynesboro, Pa., assisted, Jeter said.

Men demand money, get away with coat

Hagerstown City Police were investigating a robbery Saturday in the 200 block of South Potomac Street.

Police said two men grabbed the victim and demanded money at approximately 11:30 p.m. Police said the victim broke away from the two men, but not before they took his coat.

Police did not have a detailed description of the assailants.

Four-wheeler, bicycles missing

The Washington County Sheriff's Office took the following reports of theft Saturday.

  • A yellow and black Honda TRX-400 four-wheeler was reported missing from a storage shed at 613 N. Main St., Boonsboro. The four-wheeler was valued at $3,000.

  • A drill, CDs, a pair of sunglasses and a utility knife were reported stolen from a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck parked at 3 Catawba Place.

  • Two bicycles valued at $200 each were reported stolen from the Yogi Bear Campground, 16159 Lappans Road.

Two Md. men face drug charges

FREDERICK, Md. - The Frederick Police Department arrested two men on drug charges Sunday night, police said.

Russell Eugene Hewitt Jr., 41, of Frederick, was charged with possession of crack cocaine, police said.

Darrell Martin, 44, of Gaithersburg, Md., was charged with distribution of crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute crack, two counts of possession of crack cocaine, and possession of cocaine paraphernalia, police said.
