Woman faces false statement charge

Hagerstown City Police charged a Pennsylvania woman who alleged she was the victim of a carjacking and kidnapping last week with making a false statement to police about the incident.

Lt. Rick Johnson said Monday that police charged Kathy M. Jones, 18, of 12451 Randy Drive in Greencastle, Pa., with providing false information to investigators on Oct. 20.

A police news release said Detective Pat Moulton believed that statements from the alleged victim that led to the arrest of Harold R. Bean Jr. on charges including first-degree assault, carjacking and kidnapping allegedly were untrue.

Moulton relayed her findings to the Washington County State's Attorney's Office and all criminal charges against Bean were dismissed in Washington County District Court last Wednesday.

Police said the woman told investigators that a man held her at knifepoint in her car in the Ames parking lot on Dual Highway on Oct. 20, forced her to drive to a supermarket to cash a personal check and then took the money from the cashed check.

A police officer said police believe Bean never held a knife on the woman. The spokeswoman said the two met earlier Oct. 20, but did not have a previous relationship.
