Area roundup - Wildcats earn top seed in 1A West

As expected, Williamsport was awarded the top seed in Class 1A West as the state volleyball playoffs begin with first-round games Friday.

Clear Spring, the No. 9 seed in 1A West, travels to No. 8-seed Westmar, while Hancock, the No. 10 seed, travels to No. 7-seed Beall for first-round matchups Friday. The winner of the Clear Spring-Westmar match will play Williamsport, whle the winner of the Hancock-Beall match plays No. 2-seed Southern Garrett in the quarterfinals on Monday.

In other 1A West quarterfinals Monday, No. 3-seed Boonsboro hosts No. 6-seed Allegany and No. 4-seed Smithsburg hosts No. 5-seed Northern Garrett.

In 1A South, Catoctin is the No. 2-seed and received byes through to next Wednesday's semifinals, where the Cougars will play ther winner of Monday's quarterfinal between No. 3-seed Havre de Grace and No. 6-seed Brunswick. Poolesville is the top seed in the region.

In 2A West, No. 7-seed South Hagerstown hosts No. 10-seed Walkersville and No. 6-seed Winters Mill hosts No. 11-seed North Hagerstown in first-round matchups Friday. No. 3-seed Middletown awaits the winner of Winters Mill-North Hagerstown in the quarterfinals.

In 3A West, Frederick is the No. 8 seed and hosts No. 9-seed Urbana in Friday's first round.

In 4A North, No. 4-seed Thomas Johnson received a first-round bye and will host No. 5-seed Walbrook in Monday's quarterfinals.

Times for the matches will be announced at a later date.

Brandywine Heights 3 Greencastle-Antrim 0


DILLSBURG, Pa. - Greencastle's season came to an end Monday as the Blue Devils lost in the first round of District 3-AA play to Brandywine Heights, 25-16, 25-16, 25-12 at Northern High School.

Jessica Statler had six kills and 16 digs, Whitney Meyers had six kills and five blocks, Jessica Ritchey had 18 sets and seven kills and Jade Dunhour had 44 sets for the Blue Devils (10-8).

North 3, Catoctin 0


Tracey Hinkle had three aces and six kills as North Hagerstown swept Catoctin, 25-11, 25-15, 25-14. Ariel Kifer had seven aces and 11 digs and Sarah Staley had four aces and nine assists for the Hubs (8-8).

Kelly Stiles had five digs and two aces, Becky Cuddahee had five digs and Becky Peters had three digs for Catoctin (6-8).

Northwestern 3, Smithsburg 0: Game scores were 25-8, 25-16, 25-10.




BRIEF



Herbert competes in Ironman


Hagerstown native Kevin Herbert competed in the Ironman Triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on Oct. 18.

Herbert, who now lives in Newport Beach, Calif., completed the event in 10 hours, 37 minutes, 11 seconds, ranking 528th out of the 1,569 entrants who finished.

Herbert finished the 2.4-mile swim in 1:03:31 (533rd best), the 112-mile bike ride in 5:33:20 (583rd, averaging 20.1 mph) and the 26.2-mile run 3:50:01 (570th, 8:46 pace).

Herbert is a 1982 graduate of North Hagerstown High School. He is the son of Janice Mullendore and the late William Herbert.
