COLERA, Md. - Anthony Aziz scored on a shot deflected off a West Nottingham defender to give St. Maria Goretti a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Maryland Independent Schools Tournament.

Kevin Brashears made 12 saves for his third shutout in four tournament games over the weekend - including two against West Nottingham, which the Gaels play to a scoreless tie Saturday to open the tourney.

Goretti defeated The Heights on a penalty shootout earlier Sunday. Mike Burke scored in regulation as the teams played to a 1-1 tie, and Ben Miljour, Andrew Beck and Matt Enriquez scored in the shootout, which the Gaels won, 3-2.

Also Saturday, Goretti defeated Barrie School, 5-0. Enriquez, Burke, Jeb Schramm, Aziz and Matt Gilbert scored, while Matt Cotleur, Burke and Anthony Durski had assists and Brashears made five saves for his other shutout.



Shepherd 2, Concord 1

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Theresa Ryan's unassisted score in the 80th minute lifted the Rams to a victory.

Shepherd (9-9, 4-4) took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute on Concord's own goal, but the Mountain Lions made up for the mistake on Leanna Neuner's unassisted goal in the 77th minute, just before Ryan's winner.

Amy Ridgely made five saves for Shepherd.
